Police memorial ceremony to honor fallen in Grand Forks region

Dozens of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty will be honored today during the third annual Northern Valley Police Week Memorial Service at 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Grand Forks County Court House, 124 S. Fourth St.

Dozens of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty will be honored today during the third annual Northern Valley Police Week Memorial Service at 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Grand Forks County Court House, 124 S. Fourth St.

Thirteen agencies, including U.S. and Canadian officers, and state and local law enforcement officers from North Dakota and Minnesota will be remembered, including Mahnomen (Minn.) County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Dewey, who died Aug. 9, 2010, 18 months after he was shot while responding to a call in Mahnomen. Thomas Fairbanks was sentenced to life in prison for murdering Dewey.

Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown will speak, as will North Dakota Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley, former U.S. attorney for North Dakota.

The fallen include East Grand Forks Police Officer Kenneth Olson who was shot and killed July 19, 1978, by a city resident during Olson's response to a call; and Grand Forks Police Officer Robert Martin, who died Oct. 12, 1966 after a vehicle turned into him while he was on patrol on a motorcycle.
