CAVALIER, N.D.-Police said an early Wednesday investigation into a Fargo man driving in Cavalier with an open alcohol container turned into a high-speed chase in two counties that exceeded 120 mph.
Cavalier police said an officer attempted to stop Edwin Harry Erbentraut Jr., 31, before a pursuit ensued at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release. Erbentraut led officers out of Cavalier on N.D. Highway 18 in Pembina County, eventually crossing into Walsh County on N.D. Highway 17 to head toward Grafton, N.D., police said in the release. The vehicle was disabled after Walsh County deputies deployed a spike strip to puncture the vehicle's tires near Grafton.
The suspect then drove into the Hanson Implement Dealership near Grafton and fled on foot into a tree row, according to the release. He was eventually apprehended without incident at 2:39 a.m.
No officers were injured in the incident, but Erbentraut told police he had been injured while fleeing, according to the release. Pembina County Hospital staff cleared him in a medical assessment and he was taken to the Pembina County jail.
Erbentraut faces several charges: driving under suspension, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving. He is being held on a $10,000 bond.
