A Drayton, N.D., man has been accused of trying to claim a $500 pull tab prize from a Grand Forks bar that said it didn't sell.
Kevin James Onstad, 49, appeared Wednesday in Grand Forks District Court on a Class C felony of fraudulent scheme or technique to cheat or skim. Onstad allegedly attempted to claim the pull tab prize Nov. 22 at the Diamond Bar at 1607 DeMers Ave., according to court documents. He said he received the ticket from a pull tab machine at the bar, the charging documents said.
Employees said the pull tab seemed suspicious, adding the back of the ticket said he only could win $100, according to court documents. The front side of the ticket showing the $500 prize appeared to come from a different game, one that "isn't even played at the Diamond Bar," according to court documents.
Onstad was booked Tuesday into the Grand Forks County Correctional Center. He faces five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
He has a criminal history in North Dakota that includes charges of issuing a check or draft without sufficient funds or credit, reckless endangerment and driving under the influence.
