Northland Community and Technical College is one win away from a national men's basketball title.

The Pioneers beat College of DuPage, Ill., 62-52 on Friday night to advance to today's NJCAA Division III national title game against undefeated Sullivan County of New York (31-0), the top-ranked team in the country. The game will be played in Delhi, N.Y.

Trumaine Johnson led Northland with 19 points, while Kyrk Freeman and Tomas Loberg followed with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Northland trailed 31-30 at the half. However, the Pioneers were up 43-36 with nine minutes to play.

The Pioneers then went up 51-38 on Brandon Fontes' three-point play with three minutes to play.

Northland improved to 25-9. The Pioneers have won 26 in a row.

DuPage was led by Sean Clinton's 15 points.

The Pioneers were 19-for-47 from the field, while DuPage was 19-for-52. The Pioneers also were outrebounded 38-36.

Northland women

Brookdale Community College of New Jersey opened a big lead early and hung on to beat Northland Community and Technical College 81-74 in Friday's consolation round of the NJCAA Division III tournament in Utica, N.Y.

Brookdale led 42-32 at halftime and held a 53-35 advantage with 17 minutes to go before the Pioneers responded with a 30-9 run.

The Jersey Blues were led by Brie Kwiatkowski's 22 points.

Northland, which dropped to 14-18, was led by Casey Engelstad's 17 points and 13 rebounds. Jackie Fossum added 14 points.

Northland will play in today's seventh-place game.
