A Pembina, N.D., man convicted in the shooting murder of a Walhalla, N.D., teenager was sentenced to life in prison without parole today, according to one of his attorneys.
In early August, Miguel Medina-Romero was convicted of murdering 19-year-old B.J. Kalis using a .223-caliber, short-barreled rifle.
Court records show that in October 2010, Medina-Romero fired at Kalis as he attempted to exit his car outside Medina-Romero's house.
He also received the maximum sentences for growing marijuana and possession of cocaine seized during the execution of a search warrant. A separate charge of tampering with evidence was dismissed earlier in the trial.
Medina-Romero called 911 claiming to have shot an intruder in self defense. His defense team claimed self defense because Kalis had a knife and baseball bat at the time of the shooting.
