The day was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the end of World War I, which a generation believed was "the war to end all wars."

It didn't turn out that way, of course.

The world has seen plenty of war since the first "Armistice Day," and American soldiers are in harm's way this morning and every day.

Military service protects us not only in time of war, of course, but in peace, as well. Hard experience has shown that military preparedness is essential to keep the peace.

Today's observance is meant to recognize all military veterans. Another day, Memorial Day, is reserved for those who made the greatest sacrifice, by giving their lives.

We remember those with grief and gratitude, and we've devised ceremonies to honor them and their sacrifice.

Veterans' Day is different, however, because it recognizes the service of all veterans, many still living. That gives us all a unique opportunity to tell them how we feel.

Only two words are needed to express our sentiment. The words are "Thank you."

But these words cannot be used enough for veterans of every age and every branch of service.

That's once for each of the 50 states.

And one more for good measure, because our hearts are full of gratitude.
