BLY, Ore. -- A 33-year-old man who was formerly a cellist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra was arrested Friday in Oregon, after the State Police there said they found more than 100 pounds of suspected marijuana in his car.
David Roy Huckaby is being held in the Klamath County, Ore., jail. The marijuana was valued at $226,000, according to the Oregon State Police.
Huckaby joined the SPCO in 2009 after graduating that year from the Juilliard School with his master’s degree. He said in May 2013 he would take a leave of absence from the SPCO the next season and then announced his resignation in July 2014, according to the Facebook page Musicians of the SPCO. He has also played as a substitute cellist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
The Oregon State Patrol said Huckaby is a St. Paul resident, but a relative said Monday that Huckaby has not lived in St. Paul since he left SPCO and has been residing in California, where he is a substitute cellist.
A trooper pulled Huckaby over about 12:15 p.m. Friday for speeding near Bly in Klamath County. The trooper found 113 pounds of suspected marijuana in the trunk and Huckaby was taken into custody for unlawful possession and distribution of marijuana, the State Police said.
