A van with four teenagers rolled shortly after midnight Saturday in Roseau County because, the driver said, he swerved to avoid a raccoon on the road, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Bryan Edwards, 19, Williams, Minn., was driving a 1993 Pontiac van west on Highway 11, an icy two-lane blacktop, west of Graceton at 12:14 a.m. Sunday. According to the State Patrol, "he attempted to avoid raccoon in the roadway (to no avail) and struck it."

Edwards lost control of the van, which hit the ditch and rolled. A passenger, John Isleman, 17, Warroad, had non-life-threatening injuries. It wasn't reported if Edwards or his other two passengers, Paul Helweg, 18, and Stephen Helweg, 16, both of Salol, were injured.
