A man is in custody after fleeing the scene of an accident in Grand Forks Wednesday afternoon and leading law enforcement on a chase across the county, according to police.

Police said Joshua Thompson, 30, fled from the scene of an car accident in a van about 1:34 p.m., but was followed by the other driver, who alerted police. Officers caught up with the suspect’s vehicle near the Alerus Center, 1200 S. 42nd St., according to Lt. Bill Macki with the Grand Forks Police patrol bureau.

The driver hovered near the speed limit in the city, but refused to pull over for responding officers. He weaved through city streets and a parking lot and eventually turned onto Interstate 29, where he headed south at speeds ranging from 80 to 100 mph, Macki said.

The suspect exited the interstate at Thompson, N.D., where he led officers on a chase until losing control of the vehicle. Thompson got stuck in the ditch at Fifth Street Northeast and Grand Forks County Road 5.

He does not appear to have suffered major injuries, police said.
