The Grand Forks School Board will review preliminary recommendations at tonight's meeting that oppose closing any elementary schools and building a new elementary school on the town's far south end.
The 30-member Demographic Task Force, assembled by the Grand Forks School District, was charged with finding solutions to low enrollment at north-end schools and crowding at south-end schools as a result of increased residential development in the area.
The proposed new school, estimated to cost $10 million to $12 million, could enroll up to 300 students. An optional wing could be added to allow attendance of up to 600 students in the future as Grand Forks grows south.
That is similar to the initial design of Century Elementary School, the city's largest school. Assistant Superintendent Jody Thompson said Century needed the new wing within one year of opening in fall 1989.
A public forum will gather community input Jan. 23. The Demographic Task Force will meet Feb. 1 to review that input and prepare final recommendations to present to the School Board at its February meeting.
