Northwood tornado anniversary observances

The community of Northwood, N.D., began a five-day observance Friday of the first anniversary of the tornado that devastated the city of 1,000 people last year. The tornado struck Aug. 26, 2007.

"Northwood Tornado -- One Year Later" continues today. The schedule of events:

Today

- 1-2:30 p.m.: "Road to Resilience," program by North Dakota Psychological Association, Northwood Community Center.

- 1-3 p.m.: "Let the Games Begin," fun activities and games for children of all ages, Veterans Memorial Park. Games by Valley Community Health Center, Northwood Fire Department, Northwood Lions Club, North Dakota Psychological Association.

Monday

- 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: Picnic and "Tour of Progress," Northwood Deaconess Health Center. Burgers served.

Tuesday

- 4 p.m.: "Soaring to New Heights," Groundbreaking of new Municipal Row Hangar, Northwood Municipal Airport Vince Field.

- 5 p.m.: "Celebrating Partners in Progress," Veterans Memorial Park. Invited speakers: Gov. John Hoeven, Sen. Kent Conrad, Sen. Byron Dorgan, Rep. Earl Pomeroy and Northwood Mayor Richard Johnson.

- 6 p.m.: "Spirit of Northwood," Community Picnic, Veterans Memorial Park. Food provided by Citizens Community Credit Union.

- 7 p.m.: Community Worship Service, Veterans Memorial Park.
