North Dakota's higher ed board plans to ask for additional funds for UND medical school

FARGO - The state Board of Higher Education today endorsed the governor's budget recommendation, but decided to ask legislators to consider several items excluded from the governor's budget.

FARGO - The state Board of Higher Education today endorsed the governor's budget recommendation, but decided to ask legislators to consider several items excluded from the governor's budget.

Board members plan to ask legislators for about $1.8 million for the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The dollars would fund eight additional medical students, 15 more health science students and nine new residency slots.

In addition, board members will seek legislative support for:

- $510,000 for one-time funding to purchase software that will be used to improve student performance and retention.

- Additional funding for small- and medium-sized building projects for the university system.

Board members also will continue discussing an information technology facility that would serve the university system and be housed at UND. The board requested $17.6 million for the facility, and Gov. Jack Dalrymple recommended about $11 million.
