BISMARCK -- The North Dakota National Guard is getting a new command sergeant major, Harley Schwind Jr.

Schwind succeeded Command Sgt. Maj. Gerald Miller at a ceremony Sunday in Bismarck.

A command sergeant major looks after the welfare of noncommissioned officers and enlisted personnel and makes recommendations to commanders. It's the highest noncommissioned officer rank in the National Guard.
