C'mon nonprofits, it's just a postcard! Says the Internal Revenue Service.
It's been nearly two months since the deadline passed for nonprofits to turn in their Form 990-N and hundreds in North Dakota apparently still have not done so. They risk losing their nonprofit status, which has implications for donors seeking tax credits.
"I urge these organizations to go ahead and file -- even though the May 17 deadline has passed," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a May 18 press release.
That position still holds, according to Dana Schaar, head of the North Dakota Association of Nonprofit Organizations. She said the agency is still determining how it'll handle organizations that fail to comply, and they should just file as soon as possible.
Until this year, nonprofits earning less than $25,000 a year have not had to file the form, which is an "e-postcard" that can be filled online.

It asks for basic information such as address, principal officer and employer identification number.
According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, 691 North Dakota nonprofits have not filed. The group says there are about 5,900 in the state.
It's not immediately clear, though, how many of the 691 are actually active. UND's med school foundation, for example, is on the list of those that haven't filed, but it hasn't been active for years. The UND Foundation now does fundraising for most of the university's colleges and schools.
