Residential trash pickup in East Grand Forks will switch to a new automated system Aug. 3, according to the head of public works.

John Wachter said at Tuesday's City Council meeting that residents were sent an information packet over the weekend explaining the upcoming change.

By May 22, residents need to pick a 35 or 64 gallon garbage cart and also choose between three different sizes of recycling containers. The carts will be delivered during the week of July 20.

The city's yellow bags currently in use no longer will be available at retailers starting July 10, and residents can use any bag after that until the new system begins. There will be no refunds for leftover yellow bags.

Wachter said the schedule of trash collection will stay the same, and Waste Management will send out more information to residents in late June or early July.
