Grand Forks crews were at work on a series of river barges on Saturday morning, preparing to lash six 10 foot-by-40 foot barges together by Monday under the Kennedy Bridge for the duration of the summer while a two-year construction project unfolds.

According to an announcement from the city, boats will still be permitted through the area, but should be mindful of buoys in the area directing traffic.

The barges are part of a more than $20 million project, funded by both Minnesota, North Dakota and the federal government. Much of the work is expected to be complete by late 2018, and the final project will repaint the bridge and replace a support pier and the bridge deck, among other improvements.
