Construction is underway in East Grand Forks to add another building to an existing apartment complex on the city's north end.
An additional 36-unit apartment building is being constructed at the Green Acres apartment complex at 1800 Fifth Ave. N.E.
The new construction will be the 11th building in the Green Acres complex and will be much different than the other buildings, owner Judd Stauss said.
The new townhome-style apartments will include private entries, two-stall garages and their own heating and air-conditioning units.
Stauss said he wanted to expand the complex to compete with other apartment buildings being built in East Grand Forks.

"They're different from other apartments in town because everybody (in the new complex) has a two-stall garage and private entry," he said. "I don't think many other apartments in town have those. We had good luck with them in Grand Forks, so we thought we'd try them over here."
The building is being built on the eastern edge of the complex. A parcel of nearby land was purchased near the complex, and a change to lot lines was approved by the City Council in July, paving the way for construction.
Owners of the nearby Northstar Terrace Mobile Home Park across the street from Green Acres Apartments expressed concerns over the amount of traffic the new building would add to the neighborhood back in June, but city officials said they didn't see the increase as significant enough to cause problems.
The Green Acres property is surrounded by vacant land to the east, the mobile home park to the west, townhomes and Itts Williams Park to the south and land owned by the East Grand Forks Heritage Foundation and Northland Community and Technical College to the north.
Construction is still in its early stages, Stauss said, with walls set to go up next week. Construction will continue throughout the winter, with the new building likely finished in the spring.
