BISMARCK -- A Nevada man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a fatal stabbing on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in 2012.
U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon announced Tuesday that Waylon S. Hicks, 22, of Schurz, Nev., was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland. A federal jury convicted Hicks of voluntary manslaughter in September.
Hovland sentenced Hicks to nine years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Hicks was ordered to pay restitution of $7,043 and a special assessment of $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.
Authorities said that on July 20, 2012, Hicks stabbed Jeremiah Sage in the chest while the two were in a vehicle parked at the New Town Marina on the Fort Berthold Reservation.

According to trial testimony, Hicks left the vehicle after the stabbing, and while the vehicle was in motion, Hicks jumped onto the vehicle’s running board and slashed Sage in the throat twice. Hicks fled on foot and called authorities.
The vehicle subsequently caught on fire. Sage’s body was found in the vehicle. According to testimony from the state medical examiner, Sage died from the chest wound.
