A North Dakota Department of Transportation contractor vehicle hauling bright yellow road paint broke a strap Monday afternoon on an Interstate exit ramp in Grand Forks, sending a container with hundreds of gallons of paint flying and covering cement and grass nearby.

The accident occurred about 2:45 p.m. Monday, according to battalion chief Bruce Weymier of the Grand Forks Fire Department. A contractor working for NDDOT was turning onto I-29 northbound from 32nd Avenue South when a strap broke and a container holding yellow road paint struck the ground.

The Fire Department responds to hazardous material spills in the city. Weymier said firefighters worked to mitigate the spread of the paint and to keep it out of storm drains.

NDDOT spokesperson Jamie Olson said 250 gallons of yellow road paint spilled out in the incident. NDDOT was sending crews to power-wash the site Tuesday morning.

The protected right turn lane onto I-29 North from 32nd Avenue South has been temporarily closed, though traffic can still reach the interstate.
