ND semi driver injured when hay bale lands on top of him

A North Dakota man was seriously injured Wednesday evening while unloading hay bales from his semi shortly after being involved in a two-vehicle accident, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported today.

A North Dakota man was seriously injured Wednesday evening while unloading hay bales from his semi shortly after being involved in a two-vehicle accident, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported today.

At about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the RCMP and local emergency workers were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 3 two miles south of Carman, Manitoba.

A northbound semi trailer hauling hay bales was struck from behind by a Buick while it was turning off the highway, according to the RCMP. The semi driver, a 54-year-old man from Rock Lake, N.D., told authorities he felt something in the crash but assumed it was the bales shifting, so he continued to his destination a short distance down the road.

The Buick was seriously damaged in the accident and the driver, a 79-year-old man from the Winnipeg area, had to be removed from the vehicle by emergency workers. He was taken to a Winnipeg hospital and remains in critical condition.

While emergency personnel were working on the Buick, the North Dakota semi driver was unloading at his destination when a hay bale fell off the truck, landing on the man and causing serious but non-life threatening injuries.
