Closing announcements A broad swath of the Upper Midwest that includes the Red River Valley and the Devils Lake Basin are part of the National Weather Service's blizzard warning starting 6 a.m. Sunday. With wind gusts from the northwest that may reach 55 mph, the agency said, "this blizzard has the potential to be the most severe of the season, and could be a life threatening situation if you become stranded." It advises people to stay off the roads and, if they must drive, to bring a winter survival kit with them. Should they be stranded, they should stay with their vehicle. Most of the snow that's expected to contribute to the blizzard will have fallen over night tonight. The agency is forecasting 2 to 4 inches in a band that heads southeast from the Canadian border through the Devils Lake Basin and areas of the Red River Valley in Grand Forks and points south. It's forecasting areas to the north and west will get 1 to 3 inches. On Sunday, an Arctic front will move through the region, bringing winds of 30 to 40 mph, which will drive the fresh snow before it. The weather service said it expects low to no visibility with "widespread whiteout conditions." With temperatures forecasted to reach 20 below zero or colder, the agency said wind chill will be in the range of 40 to 50 below. The blizzard warning expires at midnight Monday.
