The North Dakota tax commissioner and attorney general are warning residents to be aware of a recent email tax scam.

The scam email, which claims to be from the Internal Revenue Service, says the recipient's "Income Tax Refund Appeal" has been rejected and instructs them to click on another button to resubmit.

"Be very cautious when providing your personal information by email," Tax Commissioner Cory Fong said in a release. "Neither the Tax Department or the IRS use email to contact a taxpayer about a particular case nor to request confidential information such as bank account or social security numbers."

The release said the "phishing" scam is aimed at getting personal information from people, including Social Security numbers, bank account numbers or dates of birth.

"There are numerous versions of these phony IRS emails and they are all scams," Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said in the release. "Do not click on any links within the email or open any attachments. Instead, simply delete the email without response."
