The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is seeking nominations for the annual North Dakota History Teacher of the Year Award.
This year, only K-6 teachers are eligible. Selection of the winner is based on several criteria, including experience teaching American history for at least three years, a deep career commitment to teaching American history, evidence of creativity and imagination in the classroom and close attention to documents, artifacts, historic sites, and the other primary materials of history.

Crookston Game
Design Camp

High school students can explore computer game design at camps offered on the University of Minnesota-Crookston during June and July.
Game Design Camp, scheduled for June 24 to 30, will provide students the opportunity to learn about the math and physics behind simulating the natural world, fundamentals of how a game works and how to program simple games. The camp also features hands-on training of commercial game editors and overall game design.
The camp is open to students in grades 9-12 and is sponsored by the UMC Math, Science and Technology Department.

Geography BeeEast Grand Forks Central Middle School eighth-grader Caleb Shaffer has qualified for the Minnesota State Geography Bee.
Caleb is the first Central Middle School student to advance to the state bee.
The state bee will be held March 30 at Macalester College in St. Paul. The winner of the state bee will advance to the National Geography Bee finals in Washington on May 22 and 23.

EGF speech
team places firstThe East Grand Forks Central Middle and Senior High Speech Team brought home first place March 10 from the Prowler Speech Invitational in Thief River Falls.
The Green Wave placed first among 11 teams, led by gold-medalist Nick Pederson in discussion. The team swept the discussion category, with teammates Keenan O'Shea, Kerianne Trudel and Tyler Barrett taking home silver, bronze and fourth-place medals, respectively.
Other Green Wave silver medalists included Matt Radi, storytelling, and Justin Nelson, extemporaneous reading. Bronze medals went to Josh Berggren in great speeches and Caleb Shaffer in creative expression. Fifth-place medalists included Sarah Peterson, humor, and Jordan Wolfe, extemporaneous reading.
Senior qualifies
for national
speech tourneySenior Herbie Kretzsinger from East Grand Forks Senior High School has qualified to speak at the National Forensic League national speech tournament June 17 to 22 in Wichita and Derby, Kan.
This is the first year that East Grand Forks Senior High has participated in the NFL and the first speaker they have advanced to the national competition.

Kretzsinger is the son of Herb and Gretchen Kretzsinger.
Academic
All-StatersSeveral Grand Forks students will be recognized at a "Parade of Academic Champions" for their selection to the Academic All-State Class A and B Teams.
The parade will be May 9 at the Class A basketball tournament in Fargo.
Selection criteria include grade-point average and ACT/SAT test scores.
The following Grand Forks Red River High School students have been selected for the following academic "team" awards: gold team: Greg Brockman and Derek Jones; silver team: Danika Bakke and Kellie Harris; bronze team: Samuel Thompson; honorable mention: Sarah Lovelace.
Grand Forks Central High School students have been selected for the following team awards: gold team: Ke Xu; silver team: Swee Lim; honorable mention: Jessica Lei, Chris Petell and Leigh Schreiner.
DECA takes 3rdThe Grand Forks Red River DECA chapter took third place at the 2007 North Dakota DECA Conference.

The conference was held in Fargo on March 11 to 13. About 450 students from 18 DECA chapters participated.
Red River had 58 students attend the conference.
Students finishing first in their respective events included: Michael Kraft, Zac Boettner, Chase Fennell, Nick Schaefer, Derek Flaten, Ayman Ahmed, Chad Smith, Jase Rosendahl and Luke Scheive.
