A North Dakota man pleaded guilty today to a pair of felony child abuse charges.

Roman Cavanaugh Jr., of Fort Totten, is accused of using a closed fist to strike his 11-year-old and 12-year-old sons.

Prosecutors say both children suffered bruising and swelling to their faces, and the 12-year-old could not speak for 24 hours because of the swelling to his jaw and mouth.

Authorities say the 35-year-old Cavanaugh was drunk at the time of the assaults.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 9 in Fargo.
