N.D. GOVERNOR RACE: If elected, Dalrymple would make N.D. history

If Gov. Jack Dalrymple wins the November 2012 election, he would make history as the state's oldest governor elected. Dalrymple will be 64 at the time. Rick Collin of the State Historical Society of North Dakota shared these governor facts: Eli C.D.

If Gov. Jack Dalrymple wins the November 2012 election, he would make history as the state's oldest governor elected.

Dalrymple will be 64 at the time. Rick Collin of the State Historical Society of North Dakota shared these governor facts:

Eli C.D. Shortridge, who served from 1893-95, is the oldest governor elected to a first term at 62 years and 7 months.

The oldest governor ever elected is Norman Brunsdale. When he was re-elected to a third term in 1956, he was 63 years and 4 months.

Collin said North Dakota did have a governor who was older when he ran for a first term. Walter Welford came into the governorship when, as lieutenant governor, he replaced Thomas Moody, who resigned in 1935

Welford was 68 when he ran for his first term in 1936, but he was defeated by Bill Langer.

Art Link was 62 years and 6 months old when he was re-elected to his second term in 1976, Collin said. He was 66 years and 6 months old when he was defeated in a bid for a third term in 1980 by Al Olson.

"So, this would mean that if Gov. Dalrymple runs and is elected next year, at 64 he would be our oldest governor elected," Collin said.

First lady Betsy Dalrymple said North Dakotans don't need to worry.

"He's got the energy," she said.
