ST. PAUL--The 2015 motorcycle riding season is off to a deadly start, with 11 motorcyclist fatalities reported this year across the state, reports the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The number of fatal motorcycle crashes reported so far this year is the highest at this point in the riding season since 1994. Most recently, four motorcyclists have died in four days, between May 2 and 5, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety.

Of the 11 riders killed in motorcycle accidents, four were wearing helmets. The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center advises motorcyclists to wear helmets and brightly colored protective riding gear for visibility and protection.

Preliminary reports by the department have concluded that rider error, such as speeding or losing control, played a factor in several crashes this year. The Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center encourages riders to brush up on safety skills and take a training course, according to the news release.
