MOORHEAD - Authorities say a Moorhead police dog led officers nearly two miles to a man suspected of crashing his car and then trying to report it as stolen.
Officers responded just after midnight Thursday to a report of a one-vehicle crash with one person possibly trapped inside the vehicle in the 2600 block of Fourth Avenue North.
The vehicle's three occupants had fled by the time officers arrived, Lt. Tory Jacobson said. At about the same time, Dilworth police received a report of a stolen vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the crash.
"It's the oldest trick in the book," Jacobson said.
A Moorhead K-9 unit, Duke, with his handler, Officer Justin Vogel, led officers almost two miles to the front door of an apartment in Dilworth, where the vehicle's owner lives and was in the process of reporting the vehicle as stolen, Jacobson said.

Police say the 27-year-old man confessed to driving the vehicle and fleeing the scene, and that alcohol was a factor in the incident. Charges will be recommended to prosecutors.
