MOORHEAD – A 34-year-old Moorhead man is in custody after a police chase Sunday evening in Glyndon, Dilworth and Moorhead.

Sgt. Mark Empting said the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received multiple complaints about Joseph Alan Haakenson’s driving on Interstate 94 near mile marker 27. Drivers reported that he was driving aggressively and varying in speed between 30 and 90 mph. Haakenson stopped at a Barnesville gas station and left without paying before a Glyndon police officer located his vehicle going 80 mph on Highway 10 near mile marker 6, where the speed limit is 65.

When the officer pulled him over, Haakenson exited his vehicle and was making gestures at the officer. “He may have possibly lunged at him or tried to fight with him,” Empting said.

Before the officer could secure him, Haakenson got back in his vehicle and took off, heading toward Moorhead. He led the officer on a chase through residential streets on the northwest side of Dilworth and into Moorhead by Eighth Avenue and 34th Street.

The officer stopped him using a PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver and arrested him shortly after 5 p.m. in the 2700 block of Highway 10. He was being held in the Clay County Jail on Sunday night.

Empting said Haakenson was suspected to be under the influence of a controlled substance.
