MINNEAPOLIS
A woman accused of throwing her puppy against a dresser, killing him, pleaded guilty this week to animal cruelty.
Holly Boyd, 28, of Fridley, Minn., could receive up to three months in jail when she is sentenced Nov. 29. Her trial had been scheduled to start Monday.
She didn't give a reason as to why she accepted the plea agreement, Assistant County Attorney Kurt Deile said. She will participate in a pre-sentencing investigation and a psychological exam, he said.
Boyd's last court appearance in April brought more than 20 protesters to the Anoka County Courthouse. They packed the courtroom after marching outside with signs demanding a strict sentence in the case. Boyd was charged with felony animal cruelty for allegedly throwing Diesel, a 2-pound Chihuahua, against a dresser and killing him because the dog urinated on her leg.

The dog's skull was broken in several places and his bowels protruded from his belly, according to the charge. Before the April hearing, a tearful Boyd told the Star Tribune that she had not killed the puppy and that the publicity had been excruciating. She bought the dog from a friend four hours before it died.
