A 25-year-old Brainerd man, arrested for shoplifting four packs of Doritos Munchies that cost 59 cents apiece, also faces a felony charge for allegedly having meth on him during his arrest.
Jesse Alvin Born was charged Jan. 15 in Crow Wing County District Court with felony fifth-degree drug possession and two misdemeanor charges of fifth-degree assault and theft. Born is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. today, Feb. 10.
Judge Kristine DeMay set bond at $50,000 with conditions and $25,000 without conditions and as of Tuesday, Born was still in custody.
According to the probable cause court document filed against Born:
• Brainerd officers were dispatched at 9:41 p.m. Jan. 13 to Cub Foods in Brainerd for an uncooperative shoplifter. A sergeant arrived and went to the manager's office. As the sergeant approached the office, he could hear yelling and a violent struggle. He entered the office and observed two store employees engaging in a physical fight with Born.

• The sergeant was able to gain control of Born. A male told police he had been punched in the lower stomach/groin area and he also had a small cut on his right hand from the struggle.
• During a search of Born, officers found items of paraphernalia, small pills and a pill bottle in a female's name. The pill bottle tested positive for methamphetamine
• The sergeant spoke with the male victim who stated he observed Born grab four packs of Doritos Munchies crackers and exit the store without paying for them, the court document read. Born was stopped by the male and another employee and he was escorted to the manager's office. Once in the office, Born got close to a trash can and the two employees observed Born put one pack of the Doritos Munchies in the trash can. The value of one pack of the Doritos Munchies is 59 cents.
