Three years ago, the Meadowbrook furniture and gift store in Grand Forks moved from its downtown location into the Grand Cities Mall.

Now the chain is taking another leap, opening a second Grand Forks store at Columbia Mall.

The new Meadowbrook Home Furnishings and Gifts opened Sunday in Columbia Mall in the former Golf Center spot next to Macy's and the food court. The existing Meadowbrook store, which also includes Urban Loft Designs, will remain open in the Grand Cities Mall.

Owner Julie Danks Kvitne said the move was influenced by a desire to attract more Canadian shoppers, who have become a growing part of the store's business.

"We just thought it was time for us to expand," Kvitne said. "The destination shoppers tend to gravitate towards the south end of town."

Meadowbrook, which also has an existing Fargo location, also will open a new store at the Moorhead (Minn.) Center Mall near Herberger's in mid June.

"We're managing to expand and keep a positive attitude," Kvitne said. "We'll see how it goes."

Kvitne said the two Grand Forks stores will have differing offerings with the new 5,498-square-foot Columbia Mall location, focusing more on gifts, greeting cards, candles, jewelry, toys, furniture, home décor and even some food items.

The existing Grand Cities Mall store will offer more furniture and rugs and will be the main base for Kvitne's in-home design and consulting business.

Justice to open at Columbia Mall

The Justice teen clothing retailer is expected to open in the former B. Dalton space at center court in Columbia Mall next month.

Signs announcing the store's arrival have been posted at the mall, and Justice's website lists a Columbia Mall location.

Justice, which targets those in the "tween" market of teenagers and young adults, currently has stores in Fargo and Bismarck.
