BISMARCK -- A flying mattress struck a sheriff's deputy as he drove down East Main Avenue Wednesday evening. The projectile shattered the windshield and flung glass at the officer.

The incident began as Burleigh County Deputy Sheriff Justin Hoag drove w on East Main Avenue, Maj. Kelly Leben said. A 35-year-old Bismarck man driving a pickup with a trailer attached was headed the opposite way.

A mattress on the trailer came loose and flew up in the air as the cars passed each other, Leben said. The mattress struck the side post by the deputy's driver side door and busted through the windshield.

Hoag was treated at a local hospital, and Leben said he is doing well.

The driver was cited for carrying an unsecured load, Leben said.
