MARILYN HAGERTY: Aphids can't help leaving sap everywhere

There are some things that fill us with wonder. We do not know when 36th Avenue South and South Columbia Road will be clear of those orange and white construction barrels. We do not know how many football games UND will win this season.

There are some things that fill us with wonder. We do not know when 36th Avenue South and South Columbia Road will be clear of those orange and white construction barrels. We do not know how many football games UND will win this season.

We do know the little aphids sucking sap from trees and leaving sticky stuff on our cars eventually will go away. Willie Huot of the Grand Forks County Extension service says he thinks the goo will be around for another couple weeks. And there's not much we can do about it.

We can be sure the car washers like the aphids. And, Huot says, we can be sure the tomatoes will ripen. Many already are. These things take a normal growing season, and that has been slow this year.

The Norwegians among us have already held a corn feed. Even though their ancestors in the old country looked upon corn as hog food.

We know for sure that school is starting next Wednesday in Grand Forks for kindergarten through Grade 9. And the bells will ring for Grades 10 to 12 on Thursday.

Ask Marilyn

Q. Did you buy a hula hoop at the Farmer's Market?

A. No, but I am still thinking about it. I bought a UND pin made from a bottle cap. I looked at some wild rice from Bemidji and admired recycled sweater mittens shown by Moonlight Crafters. Pretty clever, I thought. Waste not. Want not.

Q. What vanity license plates on cars are floating around?

A. Recently I have seen N8TIVE, GIVBLUD and FST PTCH.
