The push for flood fight volunteers to fill Grand Forks and East Grand Forks sandbags became more intense 10 years ago this week.
Grand Forks Air Force Base provided a 500-troop boost at the automatic sandbag machine, owned by East Grand Forks but based at Grand Forks' city public works facility. The airmen intended to fill 100,000 sandbags in 24 hours, bringing the cities' total to about 150,000.The city's goal of stockpiling 500,000 sandbags by Easter was far less certain. The Herald reported that 20 days of filling 5,400 bags an hour were needed to reach the 2.5 million goal. As high school students and others pitched in, the call for more volunteers continued.
Elsewhere, dike building along the Sheyenne River continued in Harwood, N.D., but additional wet snow delayed levee construction along the Red River in Wahpeton, N.D.
