March flooding 10 years ago this week involved areas other than the Red River Valley.
In south Beulah, N.D., northwest of Bismarck, rescue crew worked to evacuate people as the flooding Knife River overtook streets. About five feet of water spilled into some homes, and at least 200 people were evacuated.Flooding also chased some Mott, N.D., residents, in southwestern North Dakota, from their homes after an ice jam backed up water on the Cannonball River. The rushing river swept away some farm animals.
In Grand Forks, several thousand children gathered in downtown's City Center Mall for the third annual East Egg Hunt. In homes, area residents watched the Academy Awards to see how seven-time nominee black comedy "Fargo," filmed in Minnesota and northeast North Dakota, fared. "The English Patient" was named Best Picture, but "Fargo" star Frances McDormand won an Oscar for portraying a pregnant police chief.
