MOORHEAD - The man who thinks God told him to kill the truck driver he stabbed at a rest stop in Moorhead won't face prison time after being found not guilty by reason of insanity today in Clay County District Court.
Harmit Bhangu, 33, will instead be deported after he's sentenced to jail time already served on a separate assault charge. He'll go to either Canada, where he'd been working, or to his native country of India.
County Attorney Brian Melton did not oppose a doctor's determination that Harmit Bhangu, 33, didn't know what he was doing last Jan. 11 when he stabbed Dale Morigeau, a truck driver from Ronan, Mont.
Melton said since state psychiatrists have already ruled that Bhangu is not dangerous, it's unlikely the state hospital would have held him. That ruling came after prosecutors tried to have Bhangu committed earlier this year.
"In my mind, we tried to do the right thing the first time," Melton said.
