Man killed in accident on icy road in southern Minnesota

LESUEUR, Minn. - Icy roads are being blamed for a two-vehicle crash Monday morning south of LeSueur that killed a young Marshall man.

According to the State Patrol, Benjamin Dirckx, 22, was killed when the 2001 Ford Explorer he was driving crossed the median and was hit broadside by a semi on state Highway 169.

Dirckx was going north when he lost control of the vehicle on icy roads, according to the patrol. The semi was going south at the time of the crash, which happened around 7 a.m.

The semi was driven by John Schmitz, 54, of New Prague. Schmitz was not injured.

The West Central Tribune in Willmar, Minn., and the Herald are both Forum Communications Co. newspapers.
