MITCHELL, S.D. -- A 58-year-old man's body was found Thursday morning in a parking lot near the Corn Palace in Mitchell, police said.

Chief of Public Safety Lyndon Overweg said a passerby called dispatch around 8 a.m. to report a man lying face-down in a parking lot directly east of the Corn Palace.

There were no obvious signs of foul play, said Mitchell police Detective Lt. Don Everson. No cause of death was determined Thursday.

Everson said police believe the victim is a Mitchell resident, but they are withholding the man's name until all family members can be notified.

Coroner George Bittner picked up the body Thursday morning and an autopsy was conducted Thursday afternoon, Everson said.

He said police will release information today regarding the man's identity and the cause of death.

The scene was surrounded by crime-scene tape Thursday afternoon.

"We're not sure what happened," Overweg said. "We're taking all precautions right now. We're keeping the scene secured with personnel on it."
