A man who walked away from the rehabilitation center in Devils Lake late last month was arrested Monday, but not until he led police on two high-speed chases.

Cory Youngbear, also known as Cory Vilandre, 35, was spotted around 1 p.m. in the city's northeast in a vehicle that allegedly had just driven off without paying at the Cenex East gas station, according to the Devils Lake Police Department. It had $65 worth of stolen gas in the tank.

When police tried to stop the vehicle the driver fled, going through a residential area at more than 70 mph. Officers called off the chase, and alerted the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department and state Highway Patrol that the vehicle was heading east out of town on U.S. Highway 2.

About three hours later, a sheriff's deputy saw Youngbear in the vehicle as it left the parking lot of Ed's Bait Shop on state Highway 20. The deputy, Devils Lake police and the Highway Patrol chased the vehicle into a residential area in southeast Devils Lake.

The driver lost control, left the road and hit a snow bank.

Now in jail, he is scheduled to make a court appearance this morning, according to Police Chief Keith Schroeder.
