BEMIDJI - A 49-year-old Bemidji man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly asked an employee at the Jaycees Water Carnival if she was interested in purchasing a gun.
Edward Allen Davis was charged Thursday in Beltrami County District Court with one felony count of being an ineligible person in possession of a pistol.
According to the criminal complaint, a member of the Citizens Patrol told police at 5 p.m. that a suspect had asked a woman who was managing one of the games of chance if she wished to buy .38 Special handgun.
Once Davis saw the officer look in his direction, he began walking away quickly with an unusual gait, the complaint said.
He was stopped southeast of Second Street and an officer saw a bulge in his pocket, which, during a search, was determined to be a firearm.

The gun later was determined to be a Smith & Wesson Model 10.38 Special revolver with six spent cartridges in its cylinder, the complaint said.
The carnival employee identified Davis. She said she declined to buy the gun, telling Davis she did not like guns.
Davis then asked for a cigarette. The woman told him she is not allowed to hand out cigarettes and he told her she had better watch her back because he had a .38 Special, according to the complaint.
Davis previously was convicted and sentenced for a felony drug and assault crimes, which makes him ineligible to possess a firearm.
