FARGO – A male student was pulled from the pool at Fargo South High school Tuesday morning and his condition is “serious,” Fargo Schools Superintendent Jeff Schatz said at an afternoon news conference.
Students and instructors noticed the student was “struggling” in the deeper end of the pool during a physical education class, Schatz said. He was not swimming when he was rescued.
The student was immediately given CPR and taken to the hospital via ambulance.

Schatz did not release the name of the hospital, the name of the student or his grade level. While the school district describes the student’s condition as serious, an official said that classification is not based on medical determination.
The superintendent said the student was part of a physical education class called “Fitness for Life” that uses the pool. A school district course manual states “Fitness for Life” is required for ninth grade.
Schatz said there will be more investigation of the incident, but so far it seems like class activities were routine.
“This is a very normal unit,” he said.
Schatz said there were no indications of horseplay with other students. He said he did not know whether the student was classified as one of the strong swimmers in the class. The district was not aware of any physical concerns regarding the student before the incident.
He said counselors will be on hand to address any issues staff or students may have.
