Local political debates begin Tuesday in Grand Forks.

North Dakota District 42 Republicans and Democrats will face off at 7 p.m. in the UND Memorial Union Loading Dock. Republican Nate Martindale and Democrat Mac Schneider are vying for the Senate; Republican House members Stacy Dahl and Don Dietrich will be countered by Democrats Bruce Sanford and Corey Mock.

Those candidates also will be part of a public forum sponsored by The Chamber's Government Affairs Committee on Oct. 21 in Council Chambers in Grand Forks City Hall. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit written questions.

House candidates from Districts 18 and 42 lead off at 6:35 p.m. Joining Dahl and Dietrich will be Mark Owens from District 18. Democrats Eliot Glassheim and Lonny Winrich from District 18 will join Sanford and Mock.

Senate candidates are next at 8 p.m. Republican Andrew Lutz and Democrat Connie Triplett from District 18 will join Martindale and Schneider.

Oct. 23, candidates for County Commission and proponents and opponents of Measure 1 will take part in forums also to be held in City Hall Council Chambers. County Commission candidates Arvin Kvasager, Cindy Pic, John Schmisek and Jerry Vein start at 6:35 p.m. with the Measure 1 sides following at 7:15 p.m.

Rebroadcasts

The forums will be broadcast live on Grand Forks cable Channel 2 and rebroadcast with the following schedule:

-- The Oct. 21 forum will be rebroadcast at 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays starting Oct. 25.

-- The Oct. 23 forum will be rebroadcast at 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays starting Oct. 25.

Meet the candidates at UMC

There also will be a "Meet the Candidates Forum" hosted by The Chamber GF/EGF along with the Crookston Chamber's Legislative Committee at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in Kiehle Auditorium on the University of Minnesota-Crookston campus.

School board candidates will lead off at 7:05 p.m., followed by the City Council candidates at 7:40 p.m., the County Commissioners at 8:05 p.m., and the legislative candidates at 8:40 p.m.
