The Crookston and East Grand Forks police department along with Polk County sheriff's deputies arrested 25 impaired motorists during a statewide, DWI enforcement effort, according to a news release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. About 400 statewide law enforcement agencies participated in the effort conducted by the Office of Traffic Safety.
In addition to DWI enforcement during the campaign, these three agencies also issued two seat belt citations under Minnesota's primary seat belt law, which allows law enforcement to stop and cite unbelted drivers and passengers for not buckling up.
In Polk County between 2007 and 2009, there were 18 traffic deaths, five of which were alcohol-related. Another 271 motorists were arrested for DWI.
The DWI enforcement and education effort is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
