The Salvation Army in Grand Forks is on hold, waiting for orders to respond to the tornado disasters in Oklahoma and elsewhere, said Karen Frisch on Monday. She's a spokeswoman for the local corps.

"We have not been called out yet," she said.

Typically, the Salvation Army offices nearest such a disaster respond first and then inform national and regional leaders what is needed, so others can tailor their efforts, Frisch said.

For now, people can send donations to local Salvation Army offices, making sure to note it's for "the Oklahoma tornado," she said.

Closer to home, the American Red Cross in East Grand Forks was called on to assist residents of Crystal, N.D., who evacuated the town because of flooding Monday.

The Salvation Army's Grand Forks office is at 1600 University Ave., zip code 58203. Its phone number is (701) 775-2597.

The national website is another place to start, she said: www.salvationarmyusa.org .

Other helping agencies are always geared up to take help, which usually is best in the form of money, they say; volunteers also can sign up for other things.
