GRAND FORKS -- OK, let me get this straight. The Rev. Gus Booth thinks his right of free speech justifies his telling his congregation God wants them to vote for John McCain. According to that logic, UND professors who support Barack Obama should be able to exercise their right of free speech and tell their students that any reasonable person can see that Obama is the only choice.

But UND professors, whether they support Obama or McCain, understand that their position of authority makes it inappropriate for them to impose their personal views on their students and keep their mouths shut. Or is Booth saying that God has told him McCain is the right choice? I'm confused.

Keyser is an associate professor of music at UND.
