If the first hard frost last week didn't, the second hard frost did finally knock leaves from the trees in Grand Forks.

The National Weather Service said Tuesday morning's overnight temperature dropped to 18 degrees in town and at Grand Forks International Airport.

"In normal falls, we get the warm days, the cool nights, the browning and turning of the leaves," said Mike Fugazzi, Grand Forks Parks and Recreation. "This year, we didn't get any of that, and with the hard freeze followed by bright sunny skies, it was like going from zero to 60 overnight."

The warm temperatures had delayed the start of vacuum leaf collection in Grand Forks by about a week. Crews plan to make two complete passes through town on Monday.

Weather permitting, the collection is expected to take three weeks to finish.

Residents can pile leaves, no grass or branches, loosely between the curb and sidewalk and away from obstacles such as trees and mailboxes.

Residents who wish to haul their leaves and/or grass to one of the yard waste drop sites in town can do so through Nov. 15. Remove plastic bags when depositing leaves at the sites, so the leaves can more easily be composted.
