MOORHEAD - A Moorhead man will serve no jail time for killing his infant daughter this summer after leaving her in a hot car in front of the family's apartment.
Judge Steven Cahill rejected the Clay County prosecutor's request for a year in jail for Andrew John Sandstrom, who pleaded guilty to a single count of second-degree manslaughter in the death of his daughter Christiana last June.
Cahill sentenced Sandstrom to 10 years of supervised probation instead, saying he had been doing the best he could to get his six children into the family's apartment from the car, and simply had lost sight of the fact one child hadn't made it in.
"I don't know that the state needs to get its pound of flesh out of him when he was doing the best he could," said Cahill.
In court, Sandstrom said he was given permission by social service authorities some time ago to come back and live with his wife and surviving children.
