UMC to celebrate women in STEM
History of science expert Sally Gregory Kohlstedt will make a presentation 7 p.m. March 27 at the Eagles Nest in the University of Minnesota-Crookston's Sahlstrom Conference Center.
The university is celebrating women's history month with an event featuring Kohlstedt and a panel discussion featuring women in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, careers.
The event is free and open to the public.
SETI scientist to talk at UND

Scientist Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute, a nonprofit group seeking other life in the universe, will be featured at the UND Observatory annual fundraising banquet 5 to 10 p.m. March 25 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Grand Forks.
The banquet will also feature U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., and observatory director Paul Hardersen.
Shostak is the author of several books and host of the weekly radio show "Are We Alone." His talk, which starts around 8 p.m., is titled "What happens when we find Extraterrestrial Intelligence?"

Northland hosts spring massage therapy clinic
Northland Community and Technical College's Thief River Falls campus will hold a massage therapy clinic March 18-May 10.
Massage therapists in training will offer full-body massages to the public in Room 653. Massage times are 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The cost is $21.38 for the general public, $10.69 for Northland students.

UND med school names basic sciences chairman
Infectious disease and biodefense expert Malak Kotb has been named the founding chairman of the Department of Basic Sciences at UND's School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Kotb has been tenured professor since 2008 at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine's Department of Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology/Immunity.

• UND is hosting the annual Northeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 13 in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Students in Grade 5 to 12 from regional schools will present research projects. Sixteen junior- and 16 senior-division projects will advance to the state fair also hosted by UND April 4-5.
• Mark Harries and Ilse Coleman were recently given the 2013 UND Student Spirit Award; they will serve as student ambassadors.
n Students from Northland Community and Technical College's fire technology program in East Grand Forks recently competed at an endurance challenge in Minneapolis. The American Lung Association event raised more than $240,000.
