- Breast Cancer Research Benefit, tonight, Grand Forks: Muddy Rivers/Town House in Grand Forks will host a Breast Cancer Research Benefit tonight with a silent auction starting at 7 and a sloppy joe feed and live music by the Downtown Horns at 9. Admission is by freewill offering at the door.

The event is sponsored by Annie Blackmun, who will participate in her fourth Susan G. Komen three-day, 60 mile breast cancer walk Nov. 19-21 in San Diego. In a news release, she said her goal was to raise much more than the $2,300 minimum contribution, and that she was walking to honor her friends Dina Funk, Carrie Beane and Debi Billing, and her grandmother Elaine Blackmun.

- Inaugural Success Works, Saturday, Grand Forks: The Success Works 5K Run/Walk will be at 10 a.m. Saturday with race day registration opening at 8:30 a.m. at Success Unlimited Inc. 3551 S. 20th St., Suite B, in Grand Forks. Success Unlimited is a nonprofit that provides employment support services for individuals with disabilities. This is the first local Success Works run/walk, and it's being held in conjunction with National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Proceeds will go to grants to help individuals secure employment support services, tuition for classes or workshops to enhance employment skills or adaptive equipment to enhance performance. - Cancer Benefit for Vicki Pogatshnik, Saturday, Lakota, N.D. A benefit for Vicki Pogatshnik will be from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Seasons Bar and Cafe, Lakota, N.D., with lunch, a silent auction and a dance to The Star Burst Band.

- Basketball Benefit, Sunday, Grand Forks: The Ali Borgen and Brittany Dvorak Basketball Benefit Fundraiser will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Red River High School. There will be a girls basketball tournament for grades 3 to 10 and other games and contests for all ages. Teams will be organized into two divisions. The fee will be $20 per player.

- Breast Cancer Awareness, Monday through Oct. 23, Grand Forks: A fundraiser to benefit breast cancer awareness and Altru Cancer Center will be from Monday to Oct. 23 at Valley Car Wash, 1149 36th Ave. S., Grand Forks. The location will sell Breast Cancer Awareness bookmarks, car magnets, bracelets, antenna toppers and car coasters for only $2.49 with $1 from each sale going to Altru Cancer Center.

- Coats for Kids, Monday, Grand Forks: Coats, snow pants, hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, boots and other winter gear are being collected until Monday at part of Hutch's Coats for Kids sponsored by Valley News Live and The Salvation Army.

All sizes may be dropped off at The Salvation Army, 1600 University Ave. in Grand Forks. The winter gear will be distributed Oct. 23-24 at The Salvation Army. Bring proof of residency. For more information, call (701) 775-2597.

- Halloween costume drive/giveaway, Oct. 23, Grand Forks: Plains Chiropractic and Acupuncture is hosting its second annual Halloween Costume Drive and will collect donated Halloween costumes for children for the St. Vincent of Grand Forks annual Halloween Costume Giveaway. Bring your donations to Plains Chiropractic and Acupuncture, 3750 32nd Ave. S., Suite 103, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

- Ethiopia Reads, Oct, 23-24, Grand Forks. B. Dalton Booksellers in Columbia Mall, Grand Forks, is helping Ethiopia Reads give Ethiopian children the gift of reading by contributing a portion of the proceeds of sales October 23-24.

Money raised will help establish school libraries. Barnes and Noble will contribute a percentage of every sale when you mention Ethiopia Reads at the checkout.

- Benefit for Kelly Gray, Nov. 6, East Grand Forks: A chili smackdown and benefit for Kelly Gray is planned for 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Eagles Club in East Grand Forks. Gray, a Fordville, N.D., mother of four who works in Grand Forks, has been diagnosed with abdominal cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy in Grand Forks. Gray and her family need help with travel costs and medications. Anyone wanting to participate in the chili smack down or with donations, contact Cheryl at (218) 779-0992 or Rose at (701) 740-3028. Plan to have your chili at the Eagles by 5 p.m. Mikey's Mobile DJ Service will provide music. There will be a silent auction and a freewill offering.

- Kevin Fee Benefit, Nov. 6, East Grand Forks: A benefit for Kevin Fee, former Herald sportswriter/editor who recently underwent a heart transplant, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Sacred heart Social Hall and Gymnasium, East Grand Forks. There will be taco-in-a-bag, raffle tickets and a silent auction; admission will be freewill offering. Donations will be used to cover on-gong medical and general living expenses.
