The Park River (N.D.) Volunteer Fire Department will receive nearly $200,000 in federal funding for equipment and training, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., said Wednesday.
“These funds will help make sure the selfless volunteer firefighters in Park River have the updated equipment and training they need to not only respond to any situation, but also stay protected as they do their jobs,” she said in a news release.
The firefighters will get new turnout gear, self-contained breathing apparatuses and training, the release said.
The funds come almost a month after Heitkamp introduced a bill in the Senate that would provide recommendations on emergency responder training and resources for incidents involving hazardous materials.

“The train derailment near Casselton (N.D.) on December 30, 2013, reinforced the need to make sure first responders have the resources they need to protect North Dakota’s families and communities,” the release said.
